I love to celebrate. traditionally, most of us celebrate holidays, weddings, births, and perhaps a few other special days. but why save the celebratory actions for just these days? don’t get me wrong, I think that it’s nice to save special traditions for special days. but I also think that most of us fail to celebrate the little victories as well. take for example, a job promotion. when you get promoted, you likely have been working towards that promotion for the last 1-4 years. you’ve pushed through blood, sweat, and tears to get that promotion and yet, you might not celebrate it save a glass of wine.
celebration though, can comes come in all shapes and sizes, and in my opinion, should be used freely. passed a big test? celebrate! finished a two week stint of grueling workouts? celebrate. survive a hellish monday? CELEBRATE. I’ve been known to celebrate every monday night with a nice glass of wine or a session checking out my favorite blogs. sorry, but rarely is a monday “super awesome” and I’m proud of myself (and all of you) for getting through whatever it was that had you pushing forward despite issues.
another thing that’s been nagging me is this – why don’t we celebrate career milestones as much as engagements and babies? I’ve been lucky enough to have a large group of friends who basically kick ass in their careers and it makes me elated to hear that one made a big promotion or landed a dream job. I want to celebrate those just as much as the diamond rings and diapers! remember, you worked hard to get to where you are, you deserve to celebrate. and not to mention, you can take the celebratory time to thank those that have helped you along the way.
here are some fun ways I like to celebrate the tiniest of victories (i.e. a finished project at work, progress in sophie’s anxiety behavior, stronger biceps):
- treat yo’self to a good glass of wine or a tasty non-alcoholic drink
- bake something with chocolate in it!
- allow yourself a marathon viewing of some trashy tv
- buy a magazine and new nail polish from a drug store (this is one of my biggest “treats”)
- sleep in an hour
- get a massage
what do you guys think about celebrating big career milestones as well as small victories? tell me you like to binge on nail polish and magazines, too? and if you do have something to celebrate, hit me up and let’s go do a victory dance!
