I use to see weekends as two full days of absolute bliss and relaxation. now that I’m older and have more responsibility, I see the weekend as a two part process. the first part is friday evening through saturday night. this part is a little bit of a rest from the week and a step back from the office. it’s also a little bit of fun in the sun, catch up on studying, and trips to the woods. the second part of the weekend is all about getting ready for the week. I feel like I need a full day to get properly prepped for the week ahead, especially when I have workouts and blog posts to plan, studying, and house chores. admitting that I really only have two nights and a day to relax kind of sucks, so I’m on a mission to find ways to really appreciate the weekend and make the most of it while we have it.
the first step to appreciating and making the most of your weekend is to know how to disconnect from work. this is really hard to do for a lot of people, but it’s super important to fully allow yourself to take some space from stuff that causes stress and sucks up your time. my favorite ways to do this include:
- turn off that work phone. I’m lucky enough to have a personal phone, so I put my work phone in a drawer on the weekends so that I’m less tethered to emails.
- reward yourself with a tasty treat. I like wine and whiskey, but I also think a nice tall glass of green juice is a fabulous idea.
- create a relaxation ritual: change out of work clothes and pore over a new lifestyle magazine you bought that week. better yet, save that magazine for Friday night so that you have something to look forward to.
another way to making the most out of your weekends is to plan ahead. I find that I slow down on weekends, so I’m much slower and less deliberate about my plans unless I’ve done research ahead of time or I have committments. so if I don’t have a party to attend, I try to find one thing to do that I either haven’t done and want to, or have done and want to do it again. sometimes it’s trying out a new cafe, and sometimes it’s visiting a park I’ve been to but love dearly. doing these things makes me feel like I’m really enjoying my weekend.
my most favorite way to savor the weekend is to indulge in the things that I often don’t have time for during the week. a lot of this includes reading for pleasure or cleaning the closet, but I find that I’m most productive during the work week when I’ve allowed myself some creative time. do something that improves your mood and your soul, you won’t regret it.
so, tell me, what is that you guys do to savor the weekends? am I the only one that feels like weekends are only fifty percent play?
