thinking about making the career switch? awesome! don’t spend any time worrying about the fact that you spent X number of years developing another career – everything you do has some value in the future. here’s what you should consider before making the switch:
- explore explore explore: do your research, talk to people, and explore everything about the career you want to switch to. in my opinion, there’s nothing better than getting the chance to speak with people who are already in the field you want to go into. tap into networks like the levo league or your friends circles to identify the right people to talk to. most people are more than happy to talk about what they do for a living.
- learn as much as you can: find out if your new career path requires anything. consider schooling, certificates or degrees you might need to really get into the field. an easy way to do this is to research your ideal jobs and check out the requirements listed there. don’t panic if you don’t have the requirements just yet. you can often earn those on the side or start out at a more junior role first.
- start a side project: in my opinion, side projects are the gem of anyone’s career growth. they’re two fold – they allow you to try out something without committing one hundred percent, and they add skills to your resumé. before you jump ship to join a new career path, seriously consider starting some sort of side project where you can gain experience in that new career. this might not always be possible, but if you’re creative, you can usually find ways to explore what you’re hoping to do. for example, if you’re an accountant who wants to become a veterinary assistant, consider volunteering at an animal shelter first. this is a great way to see if you’re happy to be around animals all of the time. and if you’re not, great! you’ve successfully avoided jumping to a career that you wouldn’t have loved.
- spend time listening: thanks to the interwebs and technology, there are a ton of really amazing resources out there to help you in your journey. podcasts like the big leap show are awesome ways to hear from others who have taken jumps like the one you’re considering.
changing careers can be a scary but exciting time, embrace all of the exploring and be kind to yourself, you’ll find what you love most with time, patience, and careful attention.
